Today on Episode 2 we talked about Handmade Jewelry

Beads:

  1. Acrylic Beads - Lightweight, lots of different shapes and sizes at great prices. Great for kids.

  2. Alpha Beads - different sizes and colors. Also great for kids. Small ones are great for Jewelry, the larger ones great for keychains. Mix the larger Alpha beads with pony beads to make the keychains in your school, sport or Girl Scout colors. Great for fundraiser.

  3. Wood Beads - Great for macrame. Good match with the natural hemp cord for bracelets. Also good for schools that want to teach different culture and their use of beads in history.

  4. Glass beads - A little more expensive but lots of colors and look great. Very professional looking. Used a lot with crochet and knitting because they will stand up to washings without losing shape or color.

  5. Pearls - Cheaper pearls the color is painted on and are good for kids projects. The more expensive pearls would be better for Adults.

  6. Crystal Beads - laser beads that are some of the most expensive beads. Good if you have a lot of high end customers.

  7. Spacer Beads - For in between your other beads as an accent bead. Also good to use to keep multiple strands separated and even.

Things to take into account when Pricing your Handmade Jewelry:

  1. How much the items cost you.

  2. How long it takes you to make.

  3. Where you will be selling and your target audience.

  4. Quick and dirty method is 3 times what the materials cost you.

Project:

Magnetic Wrap: A String of beads that can be warn as a lariat, choker, bracelet or anklet. Click here for Free Instruction Sheet. Great gift for Seniors (as long as they don’t have a pacemaker) because they don’t have a clasp. They are also great for a teachers gift.

Mediums:

  1. Elastic: Comes in many colors. My favorite is the Clear Stretch Magic.

  2. Beadalon Bead stringing wire. Its wire wrapped with nylon so its thin and strong. Comes in different weights which determines how the product drapes.

  3. Hemp: Knotted bracelets by itself or with beads.

  4. Fishing Line or Nylon: its good for light projects but not for heavy because it stretches.

  5. Beading thread: better for heavy beads and pearls

Findings:

  1. Crimp bead in all my projects. Since it comes in many color and sizes you are sure to find the one that will match your project. Crimp with either a bend or flat nose pliers or a special crimper which flattens the bead and curls it so it looks like a bead.
